Smart and Data Driven Innovation - Pros and Cons
Author: SOLANKI TARUN

The purpose of this writing is to briefly see into the innovations in technology that we are working on right now and the advantages and disadvantages it going to have on us. We will assume that the bugs and other technical errors would be resolved by the time then.

When we look forward to 2100, we can see we have developed a strongly interconnected system continuously getting updated based on data. We would be able to shop regardless of having to stand in queue and everything would be done based on sensors, as some of these shopping centers have started and showing positive results, as a person could just walk in and walk out of the store with products.

Our phones can detect early signs of medical issues like Parkinson's disease based on our movement, and other symptoms and report it to the doctor. It can be through motion sensors in our mobile phone, detecting the rhythm of our walk, up and down movement, and changes in the postural behavior and even in voice, and sending records of it to the doctors and telling us before getting serious health concerns.

People would be able to wear cameras that detect motions and call for emergency if detect any anomalous behavior. It can be an accident, robbery, or anything not concerning to the people but helping to record to help for any other investigation.

When we look at the bigger picture, the motive of development is based on human concerns. It can be leisure, safety, or other things involving human ease.

As seen in China, there has currently been development in Smart City Control Center, which uses smart surveillance to record and find people involved in criminal acts, whether it be breaking traffic rules or other acts against the law. By this time, we can expect a great rise in it, as it comes with better control over crime rates, and public safety concerns. Also, assigning a ‘social score’ to people will help to further analyze and match better with job positions.

We will have developed to log every moment, as now our focus has moved to efficiency, and we can log our moments, and our time spent, and everything will be integrated. We can see in google home, and other smart devices for our ease, that always listen to us, waiting for us to say the keyword to activate. But they are always listening. Can we trust enough on these devices?

Big social media giants are already using the data obtained from people for monetary benefits. The innovation in these big technology corporations is often measured in monetary terms. And with such a pace, it is hard as we have started to grow exponentially. One thing builds over another, and we cannot just redo it, as it can disturb other inventions on the way. Big firms are a monopoly and they decide what they want to do.

With such a pace of development and a system that takes a long to resolve the issue, it can be sometimes hard to examine and see if it works for the better of us or not. Many people would want the all-time cameras to be attached to their clothes for safety but what about the person who does not agree to be recorded?

Even if the government takes control over the monopoly and uses it for the public interest, will it lead to Data Dictatorship?

There are always two sides to a plan, and will oppose or question the development concerning such issues against the society? Facebook refuses to answer many questions, and google had faced $2.7 Billion in fines from European Union but does it effect it? Well, we do not know whether these names will stay in the future, but can still see their influence of them on society now and with the pace of growth and innovation, whether it be these tech giants or anything that evolved later they would have an exponential effect on society and it is hard to conclude whether it be boon or curse to society.
