Preface

I'm glad you're reading my book.It's my first science fiction book.The inspiration for the creation comes from Japan and the sewage discharge incident in August 2023.The announcement of Japan's nuclear sewage into the sea has undoubtedly aroused the anger of countless netizens who set off an uproar on the Internet.But then gradually this matter seems to die down and be forgotten by people gradually,I don't think this is how it's supposed to be.Time can take away memories but words can't.I decided to write this story.The issue of nuclear sewage discharge should not be forgotten, because the damage caused by their behaviour to the ocean is irreversible and decades later the harm caused by nature's counterattack on human beings is unimaginable.This story is based on the damage to the ocean and human beings caused by the discharge of nuclear sewage in Japan. Scientists launched a plan to save the ocean for this purpose but the collision of human lives and personal interests made the plan almost fall short and the final plan was a success story despite difficulties.I hope this story will make people realise how important not only the ocean but also nature is to us, and that everything we do to nature has a price. We need to protect nature, protect the ocean, and not to harm our earthly home because of selfish interests.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Chapter one

Mutation

On August 24,2023,Japan urged the public to carry out 30 years of nuclear sewage discharge in Fukushima.The German Institute of Marine Science has pointed out that the coast of Fukushima has the strongest ocean currents in the world. Within 57 days from the date of release the radioactive material will spread across most of the Pacific Ocean three years later the United States and Canada on the other side of the Pacific will be affected by nuclear contamination and 10 years later the global waters will be spread. But in fact because of the extreme climate change caused by global warming caused by human actions, nuclear contamination spread around the world much earlier than they thought;In 2030 the first batch of nuclear sewage discharged by Japan has spread to the world. The color of the ocean has become grey and white ,a large number of Marine organisms have died or even disappeared. In 2040 the rainfall on land through the atmospheric circulation started to contain radiation, and the nations issued orders: When it rains, people must wear radiation-proof clothing to avoid being caught in the rain. In 2060 science and technology developed rapidly and the intelligent era arrived. In the same year, the United Nations found that the mutants in the sea continued to evolve and began to attack and occupy human territory, countries united to set up a mutant eradication team to implement the plan to combat mutants in the sea. In 2070 under the leadership of Dr. Hyde, the "Polaris" suppressor was born and achieved remarkable results in the suppression of Marine mutated organisms. Later, after continuous testing by scientists,"Polaris" was officially put into the sea for use, and humans are no longer attacked by mutated sea creatures. In 2090 the Joint Purification Center was established and Dr. Hyde proposed the Ocean Rescue plan recruiting various elite scientists to research nuclear wastewater purification agents.

August 24,2100 AD,Joint Purification Center

"Today we have a new colleague, his name is Earl, and he is going to help us with the research on Purification medicine.""Dr. Hyde says. "Hello everyone, my name is Earl. It is a great honour to be here to study and work with you." I said happily."Hey, did you have breakfast?""Hey, how is the research on the purification agent you said in your last report?""Earl, are you the youngest scientist ever to be in the press many times?"After Dr. Hyde had left, everyone was asking so many questions that I didn't know what to answer."Hello Earl, I'm Rob, their captain, the first fat man to ask you is Bob, he really likes to eat;The second bamboo-like kid is David who loves mechanical research. The third guy who wears glasses and looks like a weak scholar is Aaron who specialises in computing."Come on, I'll show you around our research center," said captain Rob.

"This is the laboratory where we study potions. This is the data analysis room where we discuss and calculate the data. This is the sonar room where we test the effects of sound waves on mutated sea creatures. This is the central control room and this is……" We walked to a windowless and locked room at the end and before Rob can say more, the alarm in the research center suddenly sounded. Rob pulled me back and in a trance I thought I heard a strange growl coming from the room. "What's going on!Is something wrong with Polaris?» Rob took me to the central control room and said, "Yes captain, the monitoring screen where the 'Polaris' is located just now suddenly went black for seconds, and then the 'Polaris' stopped working. The system detected that there was a problem with the internal pool pole and it needed to be replaced manually.» One of the central controllers said, “Then send two team members to repair it.” Rob continued.

Half an hour later two repairmen wearing radiation protection wetsuits appeared in front of the surveillance screen of the "Polaris" to begin the repair, and everyone in the control room stared at the screen carefully,This is the first time that “Polaris” has failed since it was put into service.I don't know if it is my illusion,I always feel that there is a pair of huge eyes staring at them behind the muddy water"If they have developed a tolerance to Polaris and hid it beforehand, they should not... I hope I'm overthinking it."I mumbled. But at the very moment a repairman pulled out of the pool, he saw the most frightening sight of his life, a giant mutant octopus opened its deep huge mouth. Its black and white eyes looked like a whirlpool and the two repairmen looked so small. We were shouting wildly on the other side of the screen, «Run! Take out the gun!» But it was obviously too late.The fear left them unable to move, and almost before they took a breath, the repairman and «Polaris" were swallowed by the octopus's deep mouth. Then its huge figure came to the monitoring screen, issued a low roar, and the next second the monitoring screen was black.

«No! How is this possible! We're going to consult Dr Hyde!» Captain Rob said anxiously. I looked at the black monitoring screen in silence and when it was behind the enemy, I thought I heard it say something in human language when it roared: «Stupid human…» A terrible thought was creeping through my mind. Ten minutes later everyone gathered together, the captain reported the situation. Then I watched Dr. Hyde and said what I thought, «Dr. Hyde, I wonder if these mutants have developed intelligence. I heard human language in its roar. We can't act rashly.» There was a collective gasp at this moment, but Dr. Hyde just frowned as if he had already known. He said quietly, «David, tell the military commander to send some mechs to guard the gap. If any mutated creatures comes up, kill them all. Members of the center, our purification agent needs to speed up the progress.» I looked at Dr. Hyde's calm face with an indescribable surprise, but I attributed it to my admiration for Dr. Hyde's calmness in the face of such a situation.

Chapter two

The locked room

"Earl? Earl? What were you thinking so deeply? « Captain Rob kept waving his hand in front of my eyes. «Nothing,» I said anxiously. «So we have to solve the problem from the root, here are some data of our research on purifying agents in recent years. You can have a look at it. I heard that you have also carried out related research in the past few years. If possible could you please share some of your research with us?» Rob laughed, «Of course! Even if our current technology is  developed, but to change the half-life of these substances is almost impossible, and the cost and resources consumed are too much. So I couldn't start by changing their half-lives, and as I was running out of ideas. Then I discovered a species of algae that adsorbs most of the radioactive material…» I shared with my previous findings. "Are you talking about nostoc in the textbooks? He sometimes spends a lot of time there.» Said David.

On the evening of August 25, 2100 AD it was reported that there was a large number of mutated creatures in the gap that the "Polaris" didn’t affect. And even after the a military crackdown, because of its large number, there were still some of mutated species attacking urban residents causing a large number of casualties. "Bad news, guys! Dr. Hyde informed us that the government has given us five days to develop a purification agent. They want to see results by then.» Rob solemnly said, "How is this even possible! What a wicked capitalist!» they said angrily, "Maybe it can be done. I analysed and compared the center's data with my own research data and found that our data had several things in common but both were missing something. I tried to combine them and found that it worked! «But at the same time, I also saw that your data is wrong in a few places. You are studying the precipitation of radioactive materials in sewage, similar to coagulants, and I am studying absorption. If we combine them, then add a vacuum agent and let the nostoc adsorb radioactive material into a ball precipitation, then we can achieve purification. Strictly isolate them from the ocean and then it is up to time,» I said then.

"How many parts of the data are wrong? But this is the data that Dr. Hyde gave us. He said he couldn't be wrong"

"We'll talk about that later. Earl and Aaron, both of you stay at the center and check the data at the Research center. Bob and David, we'll go outside and look for the location of the nostoc. Earl, can you draw us a picture?» Rob commands carefully.

"Of course."I quickly drew a picture for them, and then started the data calculation and analysis with Aaron.After the analysis we really found a lot of data loopholes but it was not a simple job, and it took a long time to analyse from scratch.

August 29th, 11:00 p.m."the data was right, but it was not, and a key set of data was missing.» Aaron asked regretfully,"Is this really all the data? Did Dr. Hyde miss any data and forget to send it? Well, it's been four days and they still haven't found the whereabouts of the nostoc. Tomorrow is the last day. Do you think there will be a miracle?» «This..." "Hey Earl! After what seemed like a century Bob's voice came over the intercom,"We're safe for now. Dr. Hyde looks strange. Be careful. We'll be back as soon as we can.» That relieved us a little.

Dr. Hyde looked so weird... Suddenly I stood up and pulled Aaron to the door of the locked room. To his surprise I opened the old lock on the door with a toothpick. «You, you..." "Don't make a fuss. I'm not a prince. I learned a lot from my hard life.» Then I opened the door and what we saw was a long and black channel like an endless abyss, which from time to time came hiss and roar, real hiss and roar, not auditory hallucinations. I have a feeling that the truth is in it. I no longer hesitated and pulled Aaron in step by step. The passage was so long. It was only when we began to wonder if we were going in the wrong direction that light finally appeared. We looked at each other and ran ahead.» This is... Chapter three

Truth

It is a large laboratory but in fact it is more like a prison for the two sides are lined with cages full of mutant species: octopuses, starfish, sharks......To be precise, it's a mutant that evolved into an amphibian, and they seem to be extremely excited when they see the two outsiders, constantly banging against the cage and yelling.There was a large test bench in the center of the laboratory which was still tied with dead mutant species.It was disemboweled and blood was splattered everywhere.The whole lab reeks of blood.At this point, Aaron and I could not bear it any longer and began to retching.It was only after a long pause that we continued to observe the laboratory that I began to notice a wooden table in the corner.The sight of the operating table is too shocking that I did not even notice the table. As we slowly approached it we found bottles of medicine on the table, "Olanzapine tablets, risperidone tablets, fluoxetine hydrochloride....... What are these drugs?I think I've seen it somewhere before…" Before I could think it out, Aaron's excited voice came from the side:"Here is Dr. Hyde's research data which is complete.This set of key data he really did not give us, why did he do that! Wait, the side effects of ‘Polaris: mutant species evolved intelligence because of ‘Polaris'! This is a report from twenty years ago. Why would he do this?"

When I picked up the data report to take a closer look, an alarm went off throughout the lab. Oho, there is a sensor device under the report data,Dr. Hyde is coming back, we have to hurry to go .We picked up the rest of the data and ran. Dr. Hyde appeared at the door with a laser gun step by step when we were about to run to the door, "You can't go, you two know my secret. It seems that you have to stay here. You can't mess with my plan when it's close to success,» Dr. Hyde said. «Dr. Hyde, why did you do that, why didn’t you say that ‘Polaris’ had side effects, why did you hide that crucial data from us! Isn’t our original intention to clean up nuclear wastewater?"Aaron cried incredulously, "I'm not that loser. In order for this plan to work, you have to stay here» «I remember! It's a drug for a dual personality! I've seen it in books before!» I gave Aaron a signal. When Dr. Hyde was about to shoot, I rushed to grab Dr. Hyde's hand. Soon his actions began to slow down and after a long time we suddenly heard a voice from Dr. Hyde who stopped struggling just now, "What is going on, you...Why am I here? Is he out again?» We nodded in silence and Dr. Hyde sighed and stood up slowly. "Since it is so, come with me."

After a while he took us to the table where the drugs had just been stacked and then he pushed away the small table.without the cover of the small table the original blank wall revealed a nine-grid password disk, and did not look carefully drown like it was a child's graffiti. After Dr. Hyde entered the code the door opened in the otherwise flat wall into a small office. Dr. Hyde beckoned us to the sofa across from our desk and he slowly settled into his office chair. There was a long silence but finally Aaron couldn't bear it. He asked,"Why did you do that? We trusted you so much, we worked so hard for so long, and now you're telling me it's all because of you?» I watched in silence as Dr Hyde said nothing. "Let me tell you a story. There was once a little boy who was born in the third year after the nuclear spill," Dr. Hyde said, "They lived by the sea. Before the nuclear spill reached their country's the water was blue.» He took out a picture from the drawer. It is a picture of the sea, a picture of the sea before it was polluted, blue sky and white clouds, blue sea, and three happy smiling faces.  Dr. Hyde touched the photo with a nostalgic look in his eyes,"Good times are not long, it is still the third year, the third year of the spread of nuclear sewage around the world, the color of the sea had already turned grey and white, and the original appearance can no longer be seen. The little boy's parents were infected with radiation sickness because they stayed at the seaside for a long time. But the lucky little boy didn't get infected because he didn't go to the beach often. They dragged their sick bodies and tried to take the little boy to the inland refuge, but were stopped by the army sent by the government. The army said that because they were infected with radiation and the disease could not go inland and infect others but they could take the little boy away and would bring someone in for treatment. The undereducated parents didn’t know that the disease was not contagious. They believed the soldier's words and handed the boy over to the army. After handing the boy over to the army they were left alone in their small seaside shelter to await so-called treatment. The abominable government in order not to cause panic among the inland people secretly killed the infected and rebellious residents of the seaside. The little boy was taken to a secret training center in the inland and when scientists detected his superior intelligence, they focused on nurturing him, teaching him knowledge while brainwashing him that the development of inhibitors could save his parents' lives. They asked him to participate in the research of mutated creatures. The naive boy believed it and worked hard to study and participate in the research, until he accidentally discovered that the government had already killed the residents of the seaside just because they fear the effects of nuclear sewage on people in the sea will cause public anger in the inland, and they don't want to waste resources to save a group of fishermen on the coast. The little boy forgot the cruel truth about the death of his family because he could not accept it. He still participated in the research of the inhibitor, and finally the effort paid off, he succeeded. The inhibitor he studied effectively suppressed the Marine mutation to the shore, so"Polaris" was born. He found that although the inhibitor would resist the mutant species, but it had a big side effect in the process of research:The information it emitted through the "Polaris" would gradually change the mutant's brain, making them intelligent.The little boy wanted to tell the bad news to the government, hoping to study it again, but the day he reported it, the little boy's second personality woke up. He did not report the side effects to the government, but encouraged the government to put the "Polaris" into use. Obviously the "Polaris" brought people hope. They trusted the government more and the little boy also benefited, the second personality fell asleep again from then on.The little boy woke up as a beloved saviour."

"Is this the truth that you lied about the side effects of ‘Polaris’? Although the government's actions are unacceptable, shouldn't the ultimate source be the contamination of the sea by nuclear sewage?"Aaron asked.

Hyde ignored Aaron's questions and just said to himself, "The little boy met the person he wanted to be with for the rest of his life while researching. Emma, a beautiful girl. Because of the same interests they quickly fell in love and had a lovely daughter." He didn't have the courage to raise the matter with the government again, otherwise everything he had would be lost and his family would be attacked by people. So he chose to continue to hide it. However he began to have nightmares every day, so he began to think of ways to remedy. He repeatedly applied to the government to send military mecha to guard the seaside, to prevent the failure of the "Polaris" and let the mutation have the opportunity, but the government always refused for various reasons.  In desperation he found out when the young researcher failed to purify agent data, began to study day and night, hoping to study as soon as possible. But a person's strength is too thin, so he set up a purification center, hoping to study the purification agent faster through the power of various elites, but not waiting for him to study out, the 'Polaris' brought bad news first. Through the underwater robot, scientists observed that some Marine mutants have evolved higher intelligence, and they commanded low mutants to attack human territory. The little boy's wife and children died under the attack of the mutants. The government began to pay attention at that moment, but they were afraid of losing the trust of the people, so they suppressed the news of the attack and sent the army to the seaside again.The little boy who lost his loved once again thought of the truth of his family's death when he was young.So he cedes control of his body to the intelligent and evil second personality.The second personality used the "Polaris" to send a signal to the higher intelligent mutant species, and they met secretly and signed an agreement;The Higher Intelligence Mutant provides the mutant research for the second personality, then launches a major attack to kill the government hypocrites;The second personality improvement inhibitor, promote the evolution of the mutant. Soon the main personality found the appearance of the second personality and produced some fragmented memories. So he began to take medicine to suppress the existence of the second personality but the effect was negligible. The longer the second personality appeared the more the main personality could not control the appearance of the second personality......"

"It is you, don’t you know that big attacks kill a lot of innocent people?And what about the hidden data?" I said slowly.

"I... I can't, I couldn’t stop him.As for the data,I have limited time to control my body. Moreover it’s too late, they will all come out tomorrow……blockhead, even if these wicked people survive, there will be thousands of people buried with them ha ha ha..."

"There is still time, we have worked out the formula of the purification agent."I said, we were about to head back to the purification center after tying him up, and just as we were about to step out of the small office,Dr. Hyde suddenly shouted,"Earl!" We paused."In fact the higher mutants gave me a second option at that time to study the purification agent... We no longer hesitate to get the communicator to contact the higher mutants, the moment the communicator is connected, our hearts are mentioned in the throat, "Hyde?are you calling now because you regret it?" Chapter four

End & Rebirth

Aaron and I arrived at the breach first, and it was now 3:00 A.M. on August 30. There were no troops on the coast, presumably because Dr. Hyde had lured them away last night. Just as we were about to turn on the communicator and ask where the higher intelligence mutants were, a deep voice came from the sea: "Look into the sea." I have no intention of clarifying or apologising on behalf of those who have done this, but what I can do is to restore the sea to the way it was." And then I pulled out the picture of the ocean I had taken from Dr. Hyde's desk before I left. Seeing the photo, the turtle was stunned for a moment, as if trapped in some kind of memory. I continue to work hard when I saw his reaction: "Your attack on human territory may not only be the cooperation with Dr. Hyde, but also anger and dissatisfaction with what humans have done, but many people are innocent, if you continue to attack human territory, we humans will suffer heavy casualties, but your compatriots, people will also be hurt, we must solve the problem at the root to ensure the minimum human casualties." As we nervously waited for the turtle mutants to respond, the wind whirled along the shore and the waves rolled, as if to express their dissatisfaction with the human race. Just when we thought the negotiations had failed, the turtle said, "Why should I believe that you have actually developed a purification agent but not cheat us? I need to see tangible results or we will attack your human territory." Seeing this, our eyes lit up, "Yes Sir! Our companions are on their way, and they will bring the vital material." With that, we took our communicator out and were about to contact Rob and his crew when Rob's voice behind us said, "Hey Earl, we're coming! Here's the nostoc you asked for, and we've found it!" They ran towards us excitedly, holding his sea tank of nostoc high; Without any hesitation, we began the seawater purification experiment, we carefully adjusted the ratio, the purification agent and the vacuum agent into the sea water containing the nostoc, for a minute or two, we held our breath, silently praying in our hearts, hoping that this would work. All of us were speechless at the sight. This is what the sea looked like decades ago. "Well, very well; How many years, I haven't seen my beautiful hometown for many years! Congratulations, we won't be attacking human territory, so I hope you keep your word. "Said the turtle slowly, looking closely, as if tears were filling his huge eyes.

We cheered. As the cheers fell we our eyes got gradually red. This is what the sea was like. On this day, we did the most meaningful thing in the world.

When we parted from the turtle, he suddenly said, "Could you give me this glass box? I will go back and show this to my people, they will be pleased." He took the glass box and looked at it quietly for a moment. "I have seen this plant before. It is abundant in the depths of our sea. I can offer it to you." With that, he carefully protected the glass box and returned to the sea.

Back at the purification center, we went to the locked room and entered again.As we walked to the small office in the lab, we talked about what to do with Dr. Hyde whose second personality did almost killed many innocent people, but his contribution is also indelible. As Bob and Aaron were neck-and-neck in their argument, my voice from the office said, "Come on! Dr. Hyde, he..."

Everyone came to hear the sound, Dr. Hyde, who had been tied to a chair, was lying on the small sofa opposite his desk, holding a photo of his wife and daughter in his arms. One of his hands was hanging on the ground, his cut wrist was still dripping blood on the ground, and the blood that had been dripping on the ground had gathered into a small pool of blood, and the knife fell into the blood. We don't know when he left, but he had a smile on his face. They saw Dr. Hyde who had been with them for a long time but now left like this, and their eyes were red. Although he had done a lot of wrong things, but he had also taught them a lot over countless years. There was a sad atmosphere in the office, and after a long time I found a last letter from Dr. Hyde on my desk:

I'm sorry that I left you in such a way, I have gradually lost control of the emergence of my second personality, I am afraid that one day I will not wake up, and my second personality will do something to hurt you again, so maybe my death is the best outcome. I saw your figure in the surveillance screen and heard your conversation. I am very glad that you have developed the purification agent, the research of purification agent is my lifetime dream, now that you've worked it out, I'm relieved. The only regret is perhaps not able to see the sea clear again. But I'm glad. I know you'll do a great job.

As for the hateful government, I'm sorry to keep this from you for the last time, but by the time you read this letter, the higher mutants have sent the smaller mutants to kill them who have hurt my family before, and they will be on the front page of the news today. Their evil deeds will be brought to the police for justice, which is the last thing I can do for my family. The second personality wanted the mutants to launch a massive attack to kill those hateful people, and as for the innocent people, he said he didn't care, but in fact he had already told the mutants not to hurt innocent humans.

You can tell the world what I have done, because I should have been condemned long ago. I only thought about using the mutants to kill them, but I didn't think that the mutants' invasion would also hurt innocent people at first, so what's the difference between me and them? I'm glad you showed up and saved me from making an irreparable mistake, but I still can't forgive myself.

Hyde
